SSS Format

SSS:Standard; Somewhere, Sometime.

In SSS (triple S) format, all the decks are legal as long as it was once accepted as type 2 standard deck at some moment and somewhere in the world. The purpose of this format is to encourage elder wizards to play Magic again easier than other formats. You can use your favorite deck that was long left in the storage without worrying about severe power game of Modern or Legacy.

Basic Rule

Available Cards

All the cards after Revised, except for Portal, Silver-Edged and Ante-related cards.

Combination of Sets

The combination must be accepted as type 2 standard somewhere on the earth at some moment.

Sideboard

0 or 15

Card Text

No matter which rule is used, the text of cards follows Current Oracle.

Exceptions

Exception on Set Combination (1)

On the days of Revised or 4th Edtion, the concept of Standard was chaotic. You can use any deck if you actually used. It is natural for us the elderly players not to remember all the things, some mistakes are OK. You can use 40 cards deck, or you can rebuild 60 cards deck based on the concept.

Exception on Set Combination (2)

The combination of basic set and block of sets are determined only by the combination of basic set and the first set of block. For example, 6th edition left Standard before Apocalypse but it could be used with Invasion, you can use 6th edition with all the cards of Invasion block on SSS format. It is called 6ED/MMQ/INV.

Exception on Banned/Restricted Cards

Banned and Restriction list follows the most loose rule within the SSS set. For example, Mind Over Matter(EXO) was banned during the introduction of Urza block to Tempest block based on 5th/6th basic set. The most loose rule during the period is "not banned", so you can use the card in SSS set [5ED|6ED]/TEP/USG with all the Urza block cards. On the other hand, Skullclamp was banned at the beginning of Mirrodin/Kamigawa set, so it is banned in SSS [8ED|9ED]/MRD/KAM.

Exception on Ruling

Basically the most recent rule is used. Nevertheless, the players can declare his/her favour of an older rule before starting the first game. When declared, the oldest rule is used. If the rule does not cover the action of cards, the oldest rule that covers it would be applied through the discussion at the table. Take it easy, it's not a race. ;) You can play with that "chain - subchain tweak" or "damage stack technique"!

Exception on Exceptions

The elder wizards are elderly. Allow some mistakes.

Banned List

Why not using that great cards you were familiar with? Is it only because DCI banned them after you made your deck?

  • [8th|9th]/Mirrodin/Kamigawa

    • Banned: Skullclamp

  • 6th/Urza/Masques

    • Banned: Tolarian Academy, Windfall, Fluctuator, Time Spiral, Memory Jar

  • Copy Artifact

  • Feldon's Cane

  • Ivory Tower

  • Maze of Ith

  • Mind Twist
